Material Science: AISI Stainless Steel Grades

The performance of any tube assembly depends on its metallurgical composition. We primarily stock AISI 304 and AISI 316 alloys to ensure the highest quality for our clients.

Key Technical Terminology

Understanding the geometry and processing of a tube is essential for proper specification.

OD (Outer Diameter)

The measurement across the extreme outside of the tube. This is the critical dimension for fitment into hubs, connectors, and compression fittings.

ID (Inner Diameter / Bore)

Also known as the bore size, the ID is the internal measurement. This is the most important factor for fluid dynamics and flow rate calculations.

Wall Thickness

The thickness of the steel between the OD and ID. This determines the pressure rating and structural rigidity of the tube.

Tolerance

The permissible limit of variation in a physical dimension. CNW specialises in tight-tolerance cutting, ensuring tubes meet exact requirements with minimal deviation.

Stainless Steel Tubing Wall Thickness Specifications

The relationship between Outer Diameter (OD) and Wall Thickness is the most critical factor in tube selection. It dictates both the internal bore (ID) for fluid flow and the structural tensile strength of the assembly.

Precision Hypodermic & Micro-Bore Tubing (14g to 36g)

Engineered for medical and scientific applications, our regular wall hypodermic tubing offers the industry-standard balance between high-pressure resistance and bore size. These are ideal for cannulae, laboratory probes, and micro-fluidic assemblies.

Thin Wall (T/W) and Ultra-Thin Wall (UTW)

These specialised profiles feature a reduced wall to maximize the internal diameter (ID) without increasing the tube's footprint. UTW tubing is the preferred choice for high-flow requirements in space-restricted surgical devices and diagnostic equipment.

Heavy-Wall Industrial, Metric & Fractional Tubing

For applications requiring extreme durability, we stock heavy-wall tubing in Fractional/Imperial (1/16" to 5/8") and Metric (0.2mm to 20.0mm) dimensions. With a high wall-to-OD ratio, these are robustly manufactured for high-pressure hydraulic lines, protective sleeves, and structural supports.

International Sizing & Calibration Standards

  • Needle Gauge Sizes: The standard for hypodermic tubing. Remember: The higher the gauge number, the smaller the tube OD.

  • Metric Tubing (mm): Precise decimal sizing ranging from 0.2mm to 20.0mm.

  • Fractional/Imperial Tubing: Standardized inch-based dimensions (e.g., 1/16", 1/8", 1/4") common in traditional aerospace and mechanical engineering
