Grades of Steel

What is a grade of stainless steel

Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium, with a minimum of 10.5% chromium content by mass. While all stainless steels share this basic characteristic, they differ in their specific compositions, leading to varying properties and applications. These differences in composition give rise to different types of stainless steel, such as austenitic, ferritic, martensitic, and duplex, each with its own unique set of characteristics.

Coopers Needle Works favours 304 and 316 however other grades can be sourced upon request.

304 Stainless Steel

316 Stainless Steel

304 stainless steel is a versatile material composed of 18% chromium and 8% nickel, making it highly resistant to corrosion and oxidation. It is widely used in precision engineering applications such as small-diameter tubing, fasteners, and structural components in industries like automotive, and industrial manufacturing.

316 stainless steel includes molybdenum (2–3%) in its composition, further enhancing its corrosion resistance, particularly against chlorides and harsh chemicals. This makes it suitable for marine environments, chemical processing, and medical devices. Compared to 304, 316 is more resistant to pitting and crevice corrosion.

Why 304 and 316?

Unmatched Corrosion Resistance: Both 304 and 316 stainless steels are renowned for their ability to withstand harsh environments. 316, in particular, offers superior resistance to chloride-induced corrosion, making it ideal for marine applications and chemical processing.

  • Optimal Mechanical Properties: These alloys exhibit excellent strength, ductility, and formability, allowing us to produce intricate components with precision and reliability.

  • Ease of Fabrication: Both grades are readily weldable, machinable, and formable, enabling us to meet the most demanding design specifications.

  • Aesthetic Appeal: The sleek, modern look of stainless steel complements a wide range of applications, from industrial machinery to architectural elements.

By focusing on these two premier stainless steel grades, we ensure that our products deliver exceptional performance, longevity, and aesthetic appeal.
